WEST MIAMI

It all came down to cocktails and friendly gambling. Back around 1947 Dade County wanted to curb drinking and gambling by shortening the hours in which this was allowed. A small group of business men took umbrage to this and decided to incorporate a small tract of land which might explain why West Haven was among the names considered, before they settled on West Miami.

It also helped that after the war the Florida government was giving away land in order to attract settlers and many returning soldiers took advantage of this.

Today West Miami a small municipality barely ¾ of a square mile with a population slightly more than 6,000 is one of these little known Miami-Dade neighborhoods except naturally by those living there.

It has perhaps some of the best used parks. The popular recreation center boasts an air conditioned building with billiard, hockey and foosball tables as well s large screen T.V.. There are 2 lit tennis and 1 racquet ball courts, a ball field, a basketball field, a batting cage and a kids’ playground. Add to that afterschool program and even tutoring and what family would not want to take advantage.

The city also has its own police and fire departments . Best of all for those buying in West Miami, all properties have to be recertified in order to avoid or to correct building and zoning violations. It may seem a hassle but ensures that values are not adversely affected.
